The Surprising Gifts of Fresh Air
Are you longing for fresh air and don’t know where to go? Do you want an informal walk with your colleagues, or would you like to organize an outdoors team-building event? Walking outdoors is relaxing and inspiring. You may spontaneously find yourself having entertaining talks. You may discuss a prearranged subject in a new, fresh environment. You might like to walk in silence in order to prepare yourself for upcoming efforts. Or you may want to invite birthday party guests for a surprise celebration.
Why Walk with Peter?
Peter has long and intimate experience of the areas around Amsterdam, and is a lifelong walker with endless curiosity. Take advantage of his unique knowledge and perspective of the area as he guides you on interesting, unexpected routes. You may even want to join him in one of his brief anthropological enquiries with local people.
Walks
The average walker likes to be on the move at a moderate pace for about 3-4 hours and take a few breaks on the way. Peter offers a number of such walks in the vicinity of Amsterdam where a variety of landscapes is found. Convenient public transport to many locations is available. Walks can be made throughout the year and at any day of the week.
Where Shall We Go?
In selecting a walk there are many choices:
- Variation of landscapes, or just one type of scenery.
- Wooded areas or open spaces.
- Wild nature or inhabited areas.
- Tulip fields in late April, early May.
- Sea beaches, yes or no.
- Lush suburbs, typical Dutch villages or towns, an old harbor, an industrial site.
- Distance from Amsterdam, ranging from 10 to 75 minutes.
Timing
To the 3-4 hours of walking, time is added for transport, moments of rest, including at a café or terrace, and perhaps a lunch or dinner. A train or boat is taken from Amsterdam, usually at about noon. Arrival back in Amsterdam is at about 5-6 p.m. Time adjustments are always possible.
What to Bring?
Wear several layers of clothing so you can adjust to weather changes. Comfortable, flat walking shoes are sufficient. Carry a small rucksack with rain gear or a fold-up umbrella, some water, a snack, and a warm jacket for the evening. Note that you will never be more than two hours away from a café or restaurant.
About Peter
Peter van der Werff hails from a family of estate managers, foresters, gamekeepers, flower growers and landscape gardeners. Moving outdoors is in their veins and Peter was taken along for walks from an early age.
As a fieldwork anthropologist he further developed the art of relaxed trekking while reading the landscape and enjoying the impressions of mountains and coasts, forests and fields, cities and villages on four continents. He can silently soak in the beauty of nature and focus in on local people to understand how they live and relate to each other and the environment.
In Holland Peter organizes excursions for friends, relatives and colleagues, and now offers such trips to others as well. He loves the walks, the scenery, the pleasant rests as well as he likes the company.
